BC GIRLS AA VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS HIT VICTORIA
VICTORIA – Though there’s nothing unusual about the streets of Victoria being packed with fit young women, there will be even more of them starting on December 2nd, as high school volleyball players from all over BC will visit St. Michaels University School for the AA Provincial Championships. This is the first time in over 10 years that the province’s AA high school volleyball season will wrap up in the BC capital.
“There are 90 AA schools and the top 16 are competing in provincials,” says Lindsay Brooke, SMUS Director of Athletics. “It’s arguably the best volleyball that you can see.”
The latest season polls have St. Thomas Aquinas from North Vancouver, Brentwood College from Mill Bay, St. Patrick’s from Vancouver, Pacific Academy from Surrey, and Woodlands from Nanaimo rounding out the top five teams in the province.
Teams from across BC will have to fight an uphill battle to nab the provincial title this year, as they face many strong schools, such as St. Patrick’s, who have won four times over the past 10 years. “The SMUS team has learned a lot and improved immensely over the last few months,” says their coach Allison Fenneman. “The girls plan to utilize home court advantage and come out firing!”
Everyone is welcome to watch the competition unfold and cheer on the young BC athletes throughout the tournament, which runs from December 3-5 with games at St. Michaels University School and St. Margaret’s School.
The quarter-finals will run Friday night at 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm at SMUS and the semi-finals will take place Saturday morning at 10:50 am at SMUS. The provincial champions will be determined in the last game of the tournament, which will begin at 5:00 pm on Saturday at SMUS.
